Cut Stone by Abraham Verghese is a word that simply phenomenal. As a medical practitioner and an excellent writer, able to put together the two grand for a first novel to create.

Marion and Shiva Stone, could not the two protagonists of the story interesting. Born to a mother, a nun, she was orphaned at birth and is connected with the skulls. They could be immediately separated, and have grown along with more than two brothers ever. His fathermysteriously disappears at birth, and death provides a constant back-story for the novel, and what meaning is later revealed in history.
